A naturally warming cold remedy, this hot toddy is made with whiskey, hot water, muddled ginger, maple or honey, whole spices, ginger tea and a squeeze of lemon. Let it soothe a sore throat or simply warm the body.
Meet my new favorite drink and natural cold and flu remedy, a Maple Gingerbread Hot Toddy! A cozy warm winter sipper, perfect for chilly evenings fireside or when feeling under the weather.
A few months ago I caught a terrible cold and painful sore throat. It had literally been years since I’d been sick and forgotten how rotten it feels, and subsequently had absolutely nothing in the house for relief. After dragging myself off the couch to take out the trash one day, my sweet neighbor Kathy stopped me to ask if I was ok, then promptly prescribed a natural old- fashioned remedy, to sooth the throat and help one sleep. Hot Whiskey. And that’s how this drink began for me- and the funny thing is, not only did it help me feel better, I fell in love with its soothing warming effects- I still drink it, even though I’m not sick anymore.
The Maple Gingerbread Hot Toddy is really simple to make. Set a kettle of water to boil on the stove. Add a few slices of fresh ginger to a mug and gently muddle. Add a satchel of tea- here I’m using Celestial Seasonings Gingerbread Spice– and any whole spices you like, star anise, clove, or cinnamon. Pour hot water over, add a shot of whiskey ( or bourbon or scotch), stir in a little maple syrup and finish with squeeze of lemon. Meyer lemons are particularly good here. You can leave in the tea bag for extra flavor or take it out–a healing soothing elixir for a sore throat, or a nice way to warm up after being out in the snow and cold.

Ingredients
- 4 slices ginger
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 2 star anise pods
- 1 bag Celestial Seasonings Tea- Gingerbread Spice
- 1 ½– 2 ounces Scotch (Whiskey or Bourbon Coupons)
- ½ ounce maple syrup
- Squeeze lemon (½ a small lemon)
Instructions
- Muddle ginger in a glass
- Add cinnamon stick, star anise pods and one Celestial Seasonings Gingerbread Spice Tea Bag.
- Add Scotch & maple syrup
- Pour hot water over top and let seep 3-4 minutes.
- Add a squeeze of lemon and stir.
- Inhale.
